Classical Pranayama And Philosophy

This training is focused on the practice of pranayama and will also encourage those ready to further their practice of kriyas. For most, this means getting into the other dhautis and basti. Various options for asana practice are offered. The afternoon lecture sessions will focus on Gorakhnath’s Siddha Siddhantapaddhati followed by open discussion and Q&A.
Gorakhnath is considered the preeminent hatha yogi, supposed to have lived about 1,000 years ago as the famed disciple of the great yogi master Matsyendranath. A few texts are attributed to Gorakhnath. This current rendition of his classic on the body and its secrets is about to be published in English by Kaivalyadham’s philosophico-literary department. It is considered to be the only English translation available. This text goes into great detail on events and happenings in the body, seen esoterically; however, it’s sure to fascinate anyone with a modern understanding of physiology.

It’s more of a manual than a work of philosophy, helping the student, through the teacher, navigate the way and understand practice, its process, and eventual transformations resulting from practice. The Hatha approach has tantric origins but exists as a method appropriate for both those of us living in the world with jobs and families, and for someone secluded and devoted to practice in an ashram or monastery.

Many of the descriptions are relevant to an advanced practitioner, and this is why a teacher is needed to explain what is meant by each verse so it can be better understood by you, the student, at different levels of development.

Hatha and the body, explained well here, is a practical approach, initially using the body but ultimately working deeper into the mental faculties, to experiencing growth and development toward the realms of meditation and eventual liberation. The steps of Hatha are offered as the method to develop awareness and experience true meditation. Work on the body and breath are integral to this through asanas, kriyas (cleansing techniques), kumbhakas (the various pranayama techniques) and mudras (a combination of asana and kumbhaka). At their culmination comes a change, a shift, so unique that the individual is transformed.

Kaivalyadham, by late 2018, have published one of the rare English translation editions of this old but valuable text which we will use for the discussion sessions.It is a rare opportunity today to experience a clear explanation of such often obscure and esoteric lines by an experienced yogi in practical language in order to enhance both our practice and learning. 4:00 – 5:00 pm Traditional Satsang with Tiwariji – your questions and comments for discussion on the text, pranayama, yoga in general
5:00 – 6:00 pm Pranayama practice and Pranava Japa
6:00 – 8:00 pm 3 times in the week a Core workout class led by Paul – entertaining fitness with music (25 min’s max)

Paul Dallaghan

Paul is a well-known world-class yogi, scientist and teacher with 30 years of experience in the practice and study of yoga, the breath, and the meditative techniques. His dedication to the path of yoga has come from a combination of intense practices, meditative experiences, silent retreats and numerous pilgrimages in India, Tibet and Thailand. He was one of the dedicated few to put in many years with Pattabhi Jois in the old days of ashtanga vinyasa, certified by him, with an expertise in asana. Further, his dedication to the practice of pranayama for over 20 years leaves him in a unique position as the senior student to carry forth these teachings from his teacher O.P. Tiwari and the tradition of Swami Kuvalayananda and Sri Madhavadas. In addition, he was accepted into one of the top PhD programs in the U.S. to conduct scientific research on yoga and its effects. He is still a student and loves to share and learn. Sincerity, not seriousness, is the key to enjoying this path of yoga and meditation. He has led workshops and trainings all over the world, and founded the retreat center, Samahita, in Thailand, that offers teachings to students from all backgrounds and all levels of physical and mental readiness in Centered Yoga—an open-minded method to encourage inner awareness.
